Race of the Year
1. Tour de France
2. Paris-Roubaix
3. Milan-San Remo
The Tour de France is cycling’s most prestigious race, for both riders and fans alike. “The biggest and the best with all the top riders. The race where everyone wants to be a winner,” wrote one RCUK reader. “This year’s Tour had everything. The Froome win on Ventoux was just the icing on the cake,” said another.
Froome’s victory undoubtedly played a part in the Tour de France being voted RoadCyclingUK’s Race of the Year and, with the 2014 edition set to start on home soil, we won’t count against history repeating itself this time next year.
“Paris-Roubaix never fails to excite,” wrote another reader after placing a vote for the Hell of the North, but this year’s edition was one of the best yet with a wheel-to-wheel track sprint between eventual winner Fabian Cancellara and Sep Vanmarcke in the famous Roubaix Velodrome.
Milan-San Remo conjured epic images of a different kind to finish third in the vote, with Gerald Ciolek winning a brutal, snow-disrupted edition of the race. “The weather made it spectacular but also the riders’ determination to keep going and the surprise win by Ciolek was brilliant,” wrote one voter.
