Gaerne G.Stilo+ shoes

We've been long-time fans of Gaerne and these are the Italian firm's latest flagship shoes

Italian marque Gaerne have been making top-notch cycling shoes for more than half a century, and their newest flagship footwear, the G.Stilo+, only bolsters that reputation.

Launched at the tail end of last year, the new-for-2017 update on the original Gaerne Stilo has shaved a little weight off its predecessor and also introduces a new heel cup and modified sole. Basically, Gaerne have been working to make this shoe as light, stiff and comfortable as possible.

Gaerne have made the carbon sole as thin as can be to decrease the stack height and keep the rider’s foot as close to the pedal as possible, all in the name of power transfer. Needless to say, and as we’ve already mentioned, stiffness is also the name of the game here – if you lose that town sign sprint, you certainly won’t be able to blame your footwear.

Perhaps the most eye-catching difference between the Stilo and the Stilo+ is the upper, which has been redesigned to offer excellent ventilation and breathability. The microfibre material has been laser-drilled to ensure maximum airflow throughout the shoe – these are shoes built for summer riding and stamping on the pedals, whether through your local hills or on high mountain passes.

Comfort is also accounted for by the new injection-moulded, anatomic carbon heel-cup, which promises improvements in durability, as well as an ‘anti-tendonitis’ form and internal non-slip treatment. That said, we’ve never really had any problems with Gaerne heels cups before. Gaerne have also ensured there are reflective inserts on the outside of the heel cups.

As with the original Stilos, the closure system consists of two BOA dials, allowing a precise, micro-adjustable fit. Gaerne have made use of BOA’s new IP-1 reels, which offer a better grip than before.

Other little touches include non-slip rubber inserts on the sole (the rear insert is replaceable), for added grip when walking off the bike. As for weight, you’re looking at a claimed 550g for the pair – a 16g saving over the original Stilos. Small but a saving nonetheless.

Gaerne have a proud history of crafting some of the finest cycling shoes out there and G.Stilo+ strives to live up to its ‘plus’ moniker. The bottom line is that these are among the very best shoes out there – that’s reflected in the price, but you’re not giving up anything in pro-worthy weight, stiffness or comfort.
