Schwalbe Pro One tyres

If you're thinking about converting to tubeless, these tyres should be near the top of the your shortlist

We at RCUK understand one thing above all others: tyre choice irrevocably influences your ride. Yes, those thin strips of rubber can have a hugely significant impact on the way your bike feels – and they’re also one of the most inexpensive upgrade you can make, so you may as well get the choice right.

Schwalbe Pro Ones are a tyre we rate highly – hence their inclusion in this edition of the RCUK 100 – and in our review of the 25c versions in the early part of 2016, we concluded that the Pro ones were “fantastic. Good enough, in fact, that it’s worth going tubeless just to ride them”.

It’s time to re-justify that statement briefly here if you haven’t read that review, and we’ll start with just how easy they are to fit on a tubeless rim.

Schwalbe have long been supporters of tubeless tech, and have developed the ‘Tubeless Easy Microskin’ construction for easy seating at the rim. Shocking news: we found it genuinely easy back then, and it’s still just about the simplest system on the market today.

The purported benefits of running tubeless are well known, including greater puncture protection, lower rolling resistance and potentially reduced weight, but in the 28c size that we have here, it’s a truly plushy experience. With the ability to run them as low as 50-60psi, they’re true all-day dominating monsters capable of tackling a range of terrain, on road and light gravel.

It’s not like you’re donning welly boots when you install them either. Yes, the 28c versions are naturally going to weigh a bit more thanks to the extra material, but these are light, fast tyres which weigh 275g each.

And, we know first-hand how easily they roll, being made of Schwalbe’s excellent race-ready OneStar compound, which also gives seriously impressive grip in all road conditions.

Genuinely simple fitting, almost unrivaled ride quality, and all the benefits of tubeless from the industry leaders in the tech. If you’re tempted to go tubeless, these tyres should be right at the top of your shortlist.
