An incident-packed finale to the tenth stage of this year’s Tour de France will certainly stick in the mind for some time.
Having to come from well back, Mark Cavendish found himself isolated and latched onto Argos-Shimano’s train in the closing metres.
But after Tom Veelers dropped team-mate Marcel Kittel off in front of him, the Manxman inadvertently touched shoulders with the Dutchman – causing a spectacular high-speed fall.
Kittel, unperturbed and perhaps unaware of what was going on behind him, still remained second favourite for the stage however – compatriot Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) leading the sprint.
However, with the Gorilla at full gas, Kittel found an extra burst of speed to power across the line level with his fellow German.
And his extra power proved to be just enough, as a photo finish saw Kittel declared winner by the narrowest of margins.
