dhb Aeron Storm waterproof jacket

Stunning performance and exceptional value

Decent waterproof, breathable jackets aren’t necessarily hard to come by, but they tend to make your wallet quiver in your pocket when you pick them off racks to try them on. £200-plus price tags are very common, and that’s not always a guarantee that they’ll do a great job all the time come rain or, ahem, shine.

The thing about dhb kit, because it’s sold online you can’t exactly go to a shop and try it on. But, take it from us, this £125 jacket is every inch the major player in the tempest-repelling stakes.

Back when we reviewed the Aeron Storm at the tail end of 2016, we highlighted the centerpiece fabric, which uses a fabric which seeks to maintain the optimum internal temperature of the human body (37.5 degrees). Essentially, it’s a super-breathable, completely waterproof fabric that can be worn all day in prolonged rainfall, yet still keep you pretty cool and dry in the inside by moving sweat outwards.

That’s been pretty much the USP of (generally) accepted king of the hill Gore-Tex for years now, but in the 37.5 tech it has a credible rival with claims of a 20,000mm waterproof and 18,000mm breathability rating. So credible in fact, that we’re not sure the U of Gore’s USP is really necessary anymore.

It’s not just the fabric that does the job, either. There are plentiful vents on the rear hindquarters for extra ventilation (they also double, handily, as access points for your jersey pockets), and the cut is right on the money for a waterproof cycling jacket: slim but not restrictive, and tapered to near-perfection in the back and on the double-cuff sleeves. It’s more than a match for jackets that cost twice as much.

Finally, let us reaffirm: £125 is no typo, which makes this just about the best value fully waterproof winter jacket on the market right now. Otherwise, if you want something a little lighter, check out dhb’s excellent Tempo jacket.
