UCI Cyclo-Cross World Championships: the contenders

A look at those in with a shout of winning the rainbow jersey in Hoogerheide

Two-time former world champion Zdenek Stybar has switched his attention to the road in recent years, but he still remains a useful competitor on the ‘cross bike as he proved with victory at the Versluys Cyclocross Bredene when he returned for six ‘cross races around the turn of the year. His maiden World Cup appearance, at Zolder on Boxing Day, saw him claim third place after just missing out in a sprint finish.

Living near Hoogerheide, just a few miles from the course, Stybar is yet to decide if he will compete at the weekend with bigger road challenges lying ahead. However, should he compete he will almost certainly be a contender – although he admitted himself his technical skills are rusty. With compatriot Martin Bina joining him on the podium in Zolder though, Czech hopes of a fourth gold medal will be two-fold heading into Hoogerheide.
