Moving on and the Republic is a shoe which has featured on RoadCyclingUK before, but it’s worth revisiting. It’s designed as a commuting/touring shoe, and is made from a waterproof microfibre (save from the fact it has holes in it for breathability) and has replaceable walking pads.
It’s a stylish shoe, with a classic look thanks to the laces. The Republic accepts a recessed mountain bike cleat, rather than a three-bolt road cleat. We asked Giro whether they plan a road-specific model (essentially a price point version of the Empire) and they said it’s something they’re currently discussing in-house. It’s certainly something we’d like to see.
Back to this version, however, and claimed weight is 315g for a size 42. The Republic comes in two colours (the lead/gum option pictured and black) and sizes 40-48 (whole sizes only) for £129.99.
